And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. [Ephesians 4:30]
Just as in a human relationship we can subdue and stifle a person and offend or sadden a person, so too we can hinder and restrict and extinguish the work of the Holy Spirit. There are many 'Spirit-extinguisher' Christians about. As sonn as some one shows signs of spiritual zeal and vigour or has an experience with the HOly Spirit, out comes the 'Spirit extinguisher' and is fired on that person. 
Check and test, yes, but never despise, restrict or depreciate the genuine working of the Holy Spirit.
